We were first inspired to make these by the old marble cobblestones of the streets of Mala Strana in Prague, where we had our first YuYu Japanese Calligraphy School. We loved the thought that even Mozart and Kafka, Dvorak and Beethoven walked on them too!
Then when we moved to Nelson, we discovered Takaka Marble, and found some pieces left over from the batch quarried to build Parliament House in Wellington from 1914-1922. So we started making a New Zealand version of our Prague cobblestones.
This marble dates from the Paleozoic Age, and amazingly, is between 251 and 542 million years old. So any time you are feeling your age, just stare at one of these, and see what happens!
